The brief

The centrepiece of Astana Expo 2017 in Kazakhstan was an 80-metre spherical building, the largest in the world. It was covered in curved LED displays and a complex lighting system, which all had to run in sync as one visual experience. Its size and shape made it a real challenge, creatively and technically, and it needed more than a standard content workflow could offer.

What we did

Working with Brilliant Technologies and VML Technologies, we developed a bespoke end-to-end workflow to design, manage and deliver real-time content for the sphere. We built a custom content delivery pipeline around the sphere’s geometry and technical set-up: spatial mapping, pixel-accurate alignment, and coordination with the hardware and software systems so content played back flawlessly across the whole surface.

The result was more than 125,000 pixels mapped precisely to the building’s curve. From concept to real-time playback, we helped turn the sphere into a living canvas, a highlight of the Expo for its millions of visitors.
