An interactive snow and leaf floor for Disney's Frozen

Interactive snow and leaf content for a Frozen LED floor, with Mesmer. Footsteps melt through the snow, leaves scatter around visitors' feet and hot spots set off bursts of ice, tracked by LiDAR sensors we supplied.

The brief

Mesmer brought us in to build the interactive layer for a Frozen LED floor for Disney: a 6.5-metre-square floor that had to react to the people walking across it.

What we did

Mesmer’s team supplied the artwork. We built the system that makes it react:

The floor has two scenes, and both react to the people walking across it:

  • The snow. A layer of snow that melts away under people’s feet and slowly closes up again behind them. We made several versions of the melt for Mesmer to choose from.
  • The leaves. A forest floor covered in leaves that are swept aside as people walk through, opening up trails behind them.
  • Hot spots. Areas of the floor that set off content when someone steps into them, like a burst of ice.
  • The tracking. We supplied three LiDAR sensors that track people across the floor, and set them up to drive the content.
